OUR TEAM

TEAMWORK IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO, AND HOW WE DO IT!

Voices Co. Academy is the result of two long-time singing geeks (who also happen to be married) deciding to combine their love of harmony, passion for developing great singers, and desire to share the joy of singing with others… and also a good opportunity to make use of their Pentatonix obsession!

Julian is our Artistic Director and main tutor, but his other secret weapon is his skill at arranging for Pop A Cappella!

Malia is usually on the other end of the emails, or helping tutor classes when the opportunity arises. Her other secret weapons include producing runsheets, and using the laminator.

We are always keen to work with new tutors - the main requirements are that they are great singers, and passionate about sharing the love of singing with others! If you’re interested in training as a Pop A Cappella tutor get in touch with us to find out more.

JULIAN HAY / Artistic Director + Head Tutor

Julian is a leading light in the national contemporary vocal and a cappella scene, and his innovative and meticulous arrangements have become a trademark of Voices Co.

With a MusB in Composition and DipABRSM, Julian is a sought after arranger, vocal tutor, and musical director, as well as being a qualified examiner for Trinity College London. A staunch advocate for the importance of ensemble singing, his knack for combining music and education is both inspiring and infectious.

Under his musical and artistic direction, Voices Co. were crowned the winners of TVNZ's 'The Naked Choir' reality TV singing competition, and more recently won the Australasian Contemporary A Cappella (AUSACA) competition, with his music arrangements also earning him the title of ‘Best Contemporary Arrangement’ within the same competition.

Alongside his current work with Voices Co. Julian spent 10+ years as a tertiary tutor specialising in Contemporary Voice, as a vocal tutor at NZ’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA), a vocal and arranging tutor at Vision College, and is a self-confessed coffee addict!

MALIA HAY / Managing Director

Malia makes up the other half of the husband and wife duo that head up Voices Co.

Malia has been involved in music since the age of 3. She spent a number of years in Burnside High School’s Specialist Music Programme for classical voice, completing her classical examinations with Trinity College London. Malia is no stranger to ensemble singing, most notably with Cantores Chamber Choir (Christchurch), the Tudor Consort (Wellington), and the NZ Secondary Students' Choir - eventually going on to pursue study in Opera at the NZ School of Music. Malia has also spent time teaching both violin and voice, and works alongside Julian managing and directing the Academy.

Beyond her experience as a singer and musician, Malia also has a corporate background in event management, programme administration, and as a Ministerial & Policy Advisor for the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, and is Mum to Felix (9), Cleo (7), Ada (4), and Clementine (8 months).
